How do you stay in touch with people? Do you visit them? Do you call? Do you write a letter? If you are of the Millennial Generation (born after 1982) then you most likely don’t use the traditional means of communication, instead you rely on technology to make and maintain personal connections.

Adam Thomas is of the Millennial generation and is one of the first of this generation to be ordained as a Priest in the Episcopal church. His book “Digital Disciple” explores the relation between living in a virtual world and being a spiritual person. This is one of the first books that I have read written to, the Millennial generation instead of about the Millennial generation.

Being of the Millennial generation myself I found myself identifying with many of Thomas’ examples. Being born in rural Canada being on the older end of the Millennial generation, I however did not grow up with technology to the same extent as Thomas. Whereas Thomas barely remembers a time before high speed internet, I can remember being in my twenties when high speed internet came to the university dorms. Thomas spends the majority of the book exploring how does one connect with the Holy Spirit in this virtual world.

Digital Disciple is written from a first person narrative, which helps the reader to be drawn into the dialogue. Thomas writes to the Millennial generation directly, and poses questions that cause the reader to think about how involved they are in the virtual world. Through reading Digital Disciple I found myself wondering do I find technology impeding or enhancing my spirituality and ministry. The book continually asks the reader to reflect on their own life experience. The book includes a study guide for each chapter and online resources to further learning. I recommend this book to any Millennial church leader to read. Thomas does not have all the answers but asks the right questions which allows the readers to explore their own relationship with God in the virtual world.
